H ighlander Brew Co. is located in South River, Ontario, in the Almaguin Highlands from which Highlander takes its name. The brewery is on the Northern edge of Algonquin Park. Highlander began operations in 2009 when Brewmaster Brian Wilson made the brewery’s first beer, a traditional Scottish Ale, Highlander was soon a favourite of the region. Currently, Highlander beers can be purchased in close to two hundred provincial government (LCBO) stores, select stores of the private beer chain as well as many restaurants throughout Ontario.

  • Location – Brewery is located near excellent sources of good water. The residents of Northern Ontario are very loyal and supportive and help to promote the product as a local product. The village is providing a new brewery building at a very reasonable rent. In general cost of doing business there is less because of support. There is a positive Marketing advantage being associated with Algonquin park a known destination.
  • Dynamic low cost labour force – Highlander will operate an extensive apprentice program that will provide 6 dynamic and engaged people as the main labour force for the brewery.
  • Northern Financial Support Capital funding for the new building as well as a portion of the equipment being provided by Provincial and federal government.
  • Brewing Experience – HBC has been making beer with the same brewer for the last 5 years. Beers are well received in the market place.Another brewer graduate of Niagara College has been engaged as a backup.

Dwayne F. Wanner – Dwayne F. Wanner is a shareholder in Automation Project Group and has an extensive background in business over a period of 50 years including turn-arounds, reorganizations, technology transfer and related projects.  He is the current GM of the business and its main architect. He has put together the following team of managers for the longer term success of the company. Mr. Wanner’s primary responsibilities include  sales and marketing, finance , industrial relations ( provincial reorganization of distribution) and administration.

Bernard Liehs – Bernard Liehs is also a shareholder in Automation project group. He has worked  in the field of robotic and purpose built equipment for 25 years. He has installed equipment built by APG in such craft breweries as Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas New Belgium as well as major brewers Anhueser Busch, Labatts, and Molson Coors. Mr. Liehs is currently charged with overseeing production as well as construction of the new Northern brewery.

Brian Wilson – Brian Wilson was the original founder of Highlander Brew Co. He remains as senior brewer  and the the main person behind the development of the beers now being distributed by HBC.

Matthew Dubuc – Mathew Dubuc is a recent graduate of  Georgian college. Currently he overseas purchasing, sales management , beer show scheduling , and logistics. He also assists Mr. Wanner in marketing and promotion projects and social media.He will assist Bernard Liehs in the management of the Northern Brewery.
